5 DRILLS TO SHARPEN YOUR FIRST TOUCH

Boot cushioning a football for first-touch control

Every great move starts before the ball arrives. A clean first touch buys time, beats pressure, and sets up everything that follows. Here are the five drills our academy coaches prescribe most — each needs nothing more than a ball, a wall, and ten focused minutes.

1. Two-touch wall rhythm

Stand three metres from a wall. Pass, receive across your body, pass again — alternating feet. The goal is a silent reception: if you can hear the touch, it's too heavy. Build to 50 consecutive clean pairs.

2. Cushion and turn

Throw the ball against the wall at chest height, cushion it down with the inside of your foot, and turn into space in one motion. This replicates receiving with a defender on your back — the single most valuable youth skill.

"Amateurs chase the ball. Good players arrive with it already under control — the touch IS the move." — Coach Daniel Reyes, Academy Director

3. Scan before you receive

Place two cones as "defenders" behind you. Before each wall return, shout the colour of a cone your partner holds up — or simply check both shoulders. Scanning turns a touch into a decision.

4. Bounce-ball soft feet

Drop the ball from shoulder height and kill it dead with laces, inside, and outside of the foot. Ten reps each surface, each foot. Boring? Yes. Transformative? Absolutely.

5. First touch into a gate

Set two cones two metres apart, five metres away. Receive a firm pass and take your first touch through the gate. Move the gate further and narrower as you improve — precision under pressure.

Make it stick

Pick two drills, ten minutes each, four days a week. Film your feet once a month and compare: the camera never lies, and progress becomes addictive. Our academy players re-test first touch every term as part of performance analytics — see how we track it.
